Victorian and Edwardian reproduction floor tiles are available to buy in many different colours, shapes and sizes. They can be used to create the geometric style of traditional floors and pathways for your home, whether it is for a modern or period property.
It was during the mid-1800’s when encaustic (a printed ceramic) & geometric tiles became a popular choice of floor covering in buildings of prestige across the United Kingdom. Not only were the designs colourful and impressive, but they were also extremely practical. It is likely that an original Victorian floor that has already stood the test of time for 100 years, could last at least another 100 years with the right care and maintenance.
Tragically many of the craftsmen from the Victorian era never came back from the trenches of World War 1 so the skill of Victorian tiling was not necessarily inherited, and the style became less fashionable from the 1960’s.
From the early 2000’s there has been a resurgence of interest with Victorian and Edwardian geometric floor tiles and a newfound respect and admiration for the craftsmanship involved in either reproducing or restoring these surfaces.
